NHS workers warned not to overuse protective equipment – recap

    A further 22 deaths of Covid-19 patients at West Herts hospitals were confirmed yesterday, taking the total death toll at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust to 84.

  • Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned NHS workers yesterday to -make sure personal protective equipment (PPE) is “not being used more than is needed”.
  • The comment met some backlash from Royal College of Nursing general secretary Dame Donna Kinnair who said on Saturday that PPE was not “more precious a resource than a healthcare worker’s life, a nurse’s life, a doctor’s life”.
  • A nurse at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, which treats Hertfordshire residents, complained that she felt her life was at risk and not valued – due to the lack of PPE distribution.
  • Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden called out conspiracy theories shared on TV which amounted vaccination or the virus as “fascism”.
  • As of Friday (April 10) there are 1,179 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Hertfordshire.
