The North East Nightingale Hospital is set to open by the end of April to support hospitals across the North East and Cumbria faced with the demand of those infected by coronavirus.

In just three weeks, a team of around 250 people have worked round the clock to transform an empty warehouse into a 460-bed infirmary.

The vacant unit near the Nissan plant in Washington has been converted as the NHS braces for the peak of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Despite the fact it is situated in Wearside, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is overseeing operations at the site because it has world-leading experts in the treatment of infectious diseases.

Gordon Elder, nursing lead for the project and chief nursing information officer for Newcastle Hospitals, said the NHS was completing a training programme for staff at the hospital – which would need 2,000 nurses and 500 other members of staff.

Now, jobs are being advertised on the NHS website with a number of vacancies needed filling ‘urgently’ before the site opens its doors to patients.
