There has been another coronavirus death at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, latest figures from NHS England show.

New figures released this afternoon state that another patient with coronavirus has died at the hospital, bringing the city’s total to 57.

There have been two further hospital coronavirus deaths in Cornwall, bringing the county’s total to 70.

Today’s figures show there have been no new deaths in North Devon, Exeter or Torbay.

There have been a total of 127 deaths across the whole of Devon.

The total number of hospital patients in England who have died after being diagnosed with coronavirus has reached 18,084, according to the latest official figures.

NHS England says that a further 711 deaths in hospitals around the country have been recorded in the 24 hours up to 5pm on Friday, April 24.

The update for the whole of the UK is expected later this afternoon.

The update comes a couple of hours after Health Secretary Matt Hancock posted a picture on social media of him taking part in a clinical trial looking at whether plasma from people of people who have recovered after having COVID-19 could help treat others fighting the virus.

Mr Hancock said: “This hugely important clinical trial will help our NHS treat #coronavirus patients using plasma.

“If you’re asked, please take part. It’s painless.”

NHSE is due to release statement imminently concerning the latest figures.
