The World Baseball Classic is the latest sporting event to fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 2021 WBC has been canceled, two people with direct knowledge of the decision told USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale. The people requested anonymity because the decision has not been announced.
The WBC was scheduled to be played March 9-23 in three countries: the United States, Japan and Taiwan.

IMPORTANT VOTE: MLB owners will vote on historic revenue-sharing plan
ESPN Deportes first reported the cancellation Monday, reporting that the WBC may not be played until 2023.
The tournament is part of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement with the players union, which expires in December 2021.
